Time, a philosophical post

12 Mar A puppy munches on some newspaper at the Anti-Cruelty animal shelter (but she has real food, too, of course!).

First off, I’m sorry that this is going to be a text-heavy post. Actually, I went to an animal shelter in Chicago for a project for one of my classes. I’ll put in some cute photos of puppies and kittens to give you something to look at.

Remember when you were a kid, and you had a field trip to look forward to, or something to do, but it was happening in a week. And remember how a week felt like FOREVER? And in high school when you’re a senior and you’re going to graduate in three months, and it just seems like it can’t get there fast enough?

Well I seem to be having the opposite problem these days.

I know there’s that saying, “when you get older, time flies.” (Note: Is this actually a saying? Or did I just make that up?) But it’s really, really true.

I’ve been in Chicago now for, exactly, 10 weeks. Whoa. This blog is even more on-the-nose….I’ll tell you why in a second.

OK, so I’ve been in Chi now for 10 weeks. And I’ll tell you, I can’t believe that it’s really been 10 weeks because it feels like I just got here a while ago. On the other hand, I feel very settled and like I’ve been here years. Do you ever get that feeling? Like you just got somewhere you’ve been for a long time? Indescribable, really.

So what’s interesting about this is that my internship with the State Department in D.C. was EXACTLY 10 weeks long. And as much fun as I had in D.C., I was VERY homesick the entire time I was there. I couldn’t wait to see my mommy and I couldn’t wait to get out of that city. Of course, the second I left I was like, “D.C. is so great!,” but whatever.

Ten weeks is also the longest I have ever been away from my mom. Is that a long time or a little time? Think about it for a minute. What is the longest time you’ve ever been away from your mother?

CUTE PUPPY ALERT!!

A puppy munches on some newspaper at the Anti-Cruelty animal shelter (but she has real food, too, of course!).

Anyway–back to the story. OK, so I’ve been here 10 weeks now, and while literally exactly a year ago (whoa, these parallels are crazy…I didn’t realize it was really a year ago almost to the day) I was dying to get home and had been counting the days I was away, right now I’m really feeling good about everything. I miss my family and friends, of course, but I’m also OK with the possibility of it being even longer before I see them.

I’ve been trying to think of why it’s so different this time and I have a few theories:

  1. I have stuff. Superficial, part of one. This time, I have my own space (even if it does resemble a shoe box) and I have a television, a kitchen, a bathroom and a reliable Internet connection–none of which I had in D.C. If my apartment here is a shoebox, my room in D.C. was a shoe. (Did that make sense?)
  2. I’m not missing out on anything. I was in D.C. during the time that would have been my last semester in college. Most of my friends were still in undergrad, and I think there was a sense that I should have been there, or that I was missing out on some big thing. It was also really strange to come back from D.C. and feeling like I’d been away for years, and have my friends still in school when that felt so long ago.
  3. Tennessee isn’t my home anymore. First off, my mom is going to call me tomorrow and be like, “I read your blog…have I ruined your life by moving?” No, mom. There’s no need to call. As you might have seen on Facebook/Twitter, my mom has moved to Denver, Colorado and my home is gone (well technically it’s still on the market–but it’s empty). When I was in D.C. most of the people I knew were either in Knoxville, in the South, etc. I think I had this longing to be “home.” Well, Tennessee isn’t my home anymore. My friends aren’t there (or the ones that are won’t be for long) and I literally don’t have a house there. My permanent address is, begrudgingly, my shoebox.
  4. I’m maturing? Is it possible I’m just growing up and don’t have to rely on others as much? Probably not.

CUTE KITTY ALERT!!

Pretty kitty at the Anti-Cruelty shelter.

So this is a pretty self-indulgent blog post, but I was just thinking about time, and my tentative plan for the coming year. (Keep my job I’m about to start, and take two classes per quarter until I finish grad school, then move, possibly out West.) My plan is for a year and a half from now, and for some reason that doesn’t seem daunting. I am OK with that amount of time, and I feel comfortable being here alone for that long (although I am still trying to convince my friend Nancy to move here–let’s see if she reads this and finds her name!).

CUTE DOG ALERT!!

This is Remy, I think he was happy to see me.

I should have a more photo-centric blog coming soon, with photos of my newly cleaned and decorated shoebox.

Also, I start my new job at Groupon on Monday! Very excited to see what it’s all about.

As always thanks for reading!

Last Days of D.C.

26 Mar

So this is a little late….but I forgot to update my blog the last weeks I was in D.C. I’m not going to type anything up. But I will say that as the weather got better I saw some awesome places and took some photos I really enjoy….hope you do, too.

Also, one thing I want to say: I went to the Newseum in D.C. I went to many museums during my time in D.C. and this was by far the best. I spent hours there, and every single exhibit was interesting. The museum was extremely well designed; with recent videos (from only 3 days ago), popular culture (memorabilia from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report), a special 9/11 exhibit, Tim Russert’s office, the Berlin Wall and more. I loved it and would call it a journalists’ mecca. GO. GO NOW. They had Nobel Prize winning photos, sports photography and…wow, I’m just amazed. It was the best thing ever and I “discovered” a new photographer. Walter Iooss. Sports photographer

Now for my photos…this is just a sampling. You can click on the album below.

DC Life Lately

23 Feb

It’s been so long since I’ve blogged. I know you’ve all been hanging by a thread just dying to know what’s happened lately.

The weekend before last was Valentine’s Day weekend. Melissa and I decided to meet up in Virginia for Valentine’s Day. [For those who don't know, Melissa and I have been besties since middle school, her family recently moved to Virginia. She's going to school in South Carolina, so she drove up to Virginia and I took the train down there.] Anywho…both of us had quite the little adventure trying to get there. Melissa’s SmartCar got a flat on the way. She had to be towed all the way back. My train got delayed and then had to stop for about an hour or more. We were both supposed to get there around 9pm….we got there around midnight!
Anyway, Virginia was a lot of fun. It was nice to get out of the city for a while. Hi, suburbia! Oh how I’ve missed you so!
We were able to watch the beginning of the Olympics. They were so much fun, I’d forgotten how exciting they were to watch.
Saturday we slept in some (when we woke up her mom had made homemade cinnamon bread!)….went to downtown Lynchburg and ate some lunch at a coffee shop. After that we did some errands (:)) and bought each other secret valentines. We went back to the Smiths’ house and had an impromptu-photoshoot. Here’s a little snapshot.

Her family ordered pizza and we watched more Olympics. Sunday, Valentine’s Day, Lissa and I went to a late movie (“Leap Year”–$1 movie theater–holler!). Then we went to good ol’ Cracker Barrel and had a smorghesboard [ed note: my mom informs me it's spelled 'smorgasbord'] of country goodness. We went back to Lissa’s house and exchanged Valentines…and….surprise!

We got each other the same one!
Dang we’re cute.
My train ride back was a lot better…and the weekend as a whole was so much fun!

This past weekend
Saturday I slept in and when I woke up I decided to go and visit Georgetown. I’d never been to this neighborhood before. A lot of people like it and I can definitely see why. It was more like a town/community than the other parts of D.C. Maybe it’s a little on the preppy side…but it was a nice part of the city. I went to Georgetown Cupcake
Soo good!
Sunday I went to the Air and Space Museum….

(from my phone’s camera)
It was interesting, but here’s the thing: I really don’t like large spaces….really, just large museums or stores. I get really overwhelmed when there are a lot of “options” at my disposal. I just hate having to feel like I have to “see it all” and can’t miss anything. Is this crazy? Because surely I’m not the only person who’s like this. That’s one of the reasons I don’t shop in department stores anymore…too much!
Then I trekked my bootie over to the National Archives. Took a little glanci-poo at the Declaration and the Constitution. And when I was looking at them here is what I thought about (don’t judge):

  • Wow, that’s some really good penmanship. I wonder what they would have done if they’d made a typo in the middle of it? Oopsy
  • Imagining them signing the Constitution and what it was SUPPOSED TO MEAN back then. I wonder what our forefathers would think now….? Ok, well I guess that’s a natural reaction…
  • Ok, last thing…really I was thinking about the movie National Treasure. And that little boy who kept walking in and taking down the letters. First, that room was not like the movie (SHOCK!) and then, also, I couldn’t even read those papers anymore…there’s no way a little boy could count those letters! And here I thought movies were REAL!

(both photos from my phone’s camera)

It was a lovely day Sunday…although I was sick (I have a bad cold) I really enjoyed the walk back. It was slightly overcast, but it was about 40 degrees out…which, considering the weather we’ve had here….was basically like 70. Here are a few shots from my phone’s camera.

The Capitol (above)
Union Station (below)

These photos are nothing special…but I think the blogs are more interesting when there’s something to look at…hope it gives you a little better of a picture into my life!

Anyway–that’s my life lately. Hopefully I can try and keep up with the blogging. As I said, I have a nasty cold. I’m feeling a little better today…but it comes and goes randomly. One minute I’ll be fine and able to breathe out of my sniffer, the next I’m miserably stuffed up. Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up completely healed!

My mommy (no shame, I’m just gonna put it out there–yeah, mommy) comes to pick me up three weeks from tomorrow and I’m not even going to pretend I’m not counting down the days. It’s not that I’m bored here or I don’t have things to do…because I do. But I miss being with my friends, being with my family, having my comfort-things, etc. I’ve said it before, but again…no matter where I end up, I’m just going to be happy to move somewhere and STAY there!

Work’s going well, and as far as the job hunt goes…I haven’t heard back from anything yet really. I’m applying to jobs mostly in the south, but there are a few jobs that I really want that are further away. I have a feeling that I will start to hear back from some the week before/week of me leaving D.C. Hopefully something will work out sooner rather than later!

OK–I’m going to go now…rest, watch Law and Order: SVU, dinner, work project…blog ya later! (Is that corny? I need a signature “sign-off”…)

SNOW

6 Feb

So we are currently having an EPIC snowstorm…

This is just the view from the street in front of the house. It really doesn’t look that bad, but that’s only because they’ve plowed the roads incessantly since 3 a.m. (I know, I woke up to it!).

I haven’t blogged in a while. Honestly, nothing too interesting has happened. Very quick update: job is good, I am finally getting more responsibilities and am starting to know what actually goes on, etc. My boss is so nice–he gave us all the day off on Friday, and brought us cookies! I have  couple of new friends that live in the house and are interns at the State Department, and the job hunt continues! My goal is to have a job lined up before I leave D.C. That might not happen, but it sure would take a lot of stress off if it did!

Here are some random photos from around D.C. There are four photos at the end from earlier today, and I will probably add more as the weekend goes on…

I’ve also taken shot a very quick/rough video with my Flip cam…it was really shot for my mom….so…not exactly Sundance material.

25 Jan

Well as you can see by this picture, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and I are very close. We are besties now. We exchanged friendship bracelets, email addresses, and we friended each other on Facebook.

Actually, seeing the Secretary speak was very exciting. I was close, but not too close. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a better photo than this because, not wanting to be an obnoxious intern, I decided against bringing my huge digital SLR. I definitely consider myself lucky, because I know a lot of interns would have loved to sit in on something like this, and I got to in my second week. The Secretary’s speech was held at the Newseum, a museum in D.C. devoted to…news. It actually seems really cool, and I can’t wait to go back as a tourist. Anyway, the Secretary was unveiling a new policy initiative aimed at provided complete internet freedom across the globe.

Seeing her speak made me feel how I imagine stupid people feel when they meet movie stars. Oh dang, that was mean. Actually, I’m sure it would be exciting to meet Angelina Jolie or someone like that. But it was equally, if not more, exciting to meet Mrs. Clinton. Of course (not that I spread this around the office), my ULTIMATE GOAL (in life) is to be in the same room as former President Bill Clinton. But I imagine that’s the sort of thing Mrs. Clinton and her peeps don’t like to hear.

The first politicians I was aware of were Bill and Hillary Clinton. I guess, though, at that point in my life Hillary Clinton was seen more as a figurehead than a politician. But anywho…they have been people I have linked politics with my whole life. I’ve read about them, watched them, I even had the book about Chelsea Clinton and her dog when I was a kid (true fan..holla!). Obviously as time went by, my respect and understanding for both of the Clintons grew, and it was truly odd being in the same room as someone I feel I grew up watching.

It was definitely a very “cool” experience, one I’ll never forget and something I’m truly grateful to have been at! Although…girlfriend needs to get some new pantsuits. WHEW. I think she was trying to do a throwback to the 80s. She was wearing (not sure if you can see it clearly in the pic) a long red shirt/jacket thing over some black tapered-like pants. NO. JUST, NO.

———————–

As far as work goes, there’s not much I need to fill you all in on. Last week was VERY HECTIC. We had two major events and the office has been in preparation/execution mode since I arrived. As a result there hasn’t been much time for my co-workers to train me…but this week has already been a lot more “hands-on” for me.

I ventured out to Chinatown last weekend to go to Bed Bath and Beyond (ooohhhh-exotic!). I didn’t really do a lot over the weekend other than that, though. It was rainy and gross, and when I have the chance to sleep in, I definitely take it!

Believe it or not (I can’t!) I only have eight weeks of work left! It seems like it’s gone by so fast!

I have a HUGE list of museums, restaurants, etc. to visit before I move out, so I better get crackin’! I highly doubt I will stay here (in D.C.) unless I get this one job I applied to before I left Knoxville. Which means I need to start planning out my weekends, stat!

Alright, it’s almost bed time! :)

Washington, D.C.-Week 1

15 Jan

I wish I had been able to blog before now. This week has been…a whirlwind (to say the least).

The adjustment has been monumental. You know how you get to college and all of a sudden you don’t have to wake up early anymore (or at the most you wake up early three days a week)? I distinctly remember having conversations with people about how the only way I made it through early high school mornings was because I didn’t know any different. I mean, how did I make it to school every morning by 8 a.m.? HOW?? After a taste of the college “mornings” I was certain I couldn’t go back.

Cut to me awake at 5:30 a.m. Monday morning. Dear Lord. Of course it’s not always that early. Now I wake up at 6 a.m. I had this plan before I left to start slowly easing myself into my new routine. I knew it would be a big change and I should do it slowly. Does anybody reading this blog think that happened?? Nope. There’s really nothing more jarring than waking up at 5:30 for your first day at a new, very intimidating job in a new city when you’re used to rolling out of bed at noon.

So I guess you could say I’ve been a bit tired. After a week, though, I think I’m getting the routine down. It’s really not so bad once I start getting used to it. I can, in fact, manage to get myself out of bed….but it still feels like the most painful thing ever.

My commute to work (I walk half a mile to the metro, ride, switch lines, ride, then walk another half a mile when I get off) takes about 45 minutes…sometimes an hour. My schedule before was going to be 9 to 5. But when I left at 5 this week it took FOREVER to get home….over an hour. Seems a little excessive when you consider I’m really only traveling less than three miles! Anyway, since that horrible commute I’ve changed my hours to 8 to 4, which means I leave my hall at 7 a.m. This way I’m missing most of the metro/commuter traffic, and actually the day seems to go by quicker. Which means I wake up at 6 a.m. Like I said, it’s getting less and less hard each day. And it helps that if I DON’T wake up on time, my commute takes substantially longer (extra incentive).

(Side note. This schedule is also turning me into an old fart. I go to bed at LATEST by 11 p.m. every night. And tonight, Friday, I am so looking forward to a nice sleep…hi Unisom! I’ve missed you!)

Oh, did I mention the weather? Well, actually today the weather was quite nice. I think it reached 50, which is well within my comfort zone of temperature (45-75 degrees, thank you). However, when I arrived/the beginning of this week the HIGHS for the day were around 30 degrees. Which, when you’re walking a total of two miles a day in dress clothes, ain’t comfy.

Which brings me to Day 1. (Don’t worry I won’t be going through each day individually). Anywho, prior to our start date they sent us out an email saying that our first day would be orientation. We were to arrive BY 8:30. Now, first off, most people are early on their first day, right? Second, the use of the word “by” insinuates that earlier is preferred, and that 8:30 should be the latest to arrive. Well I, like MANY other interns arrived at the Department of State pretty early…around 8:00 (there were already eight people there when I arrived). Well to my absolute shock they made us wait OUTSIDE with no shelter in 20-degree temps until exactly 8:30. We were all absolutely freezing. I mean, let’s break this down. First, say “at” 8:30, not “by” if you’re going to make us wait outside. Second, couldn’t there have been some warning? Like, “Oh, ps, you’re totes gonna have to freeze outside on the sidewalk, even though you’ve all had security clearances and there’s a completely separate security screening room you could stand in where we could then hold you in the lobby. Just fyi. Love, DoS”

First day, like most was boring. I want to tell you what we talked about….but they’re pretty good at instilling fear in us all. According to them, just by mentioning my name and workplace I am now fo-sho getting my identity stolen, and probably causing the complete destruction of the nation. (I mean, not really, but they really are very intense about social networking sites, talking about work, etc.)

I will share this nugget with you, though. According to one of our briefings, it is NOT OK for me to post the floorplans of the State Dept building on this blog. Dangit!

I would also love to tell you about our badges and all that, but common sense tells me that’s a no-no.

My job. I’m working for the International Information Programs, with the Global Digital Programs department. We are working on a project called co.nx (co-nex…connects!). I’ve updated my resumé section of my blog, so you can read specific tasks there, but basically we are hosting/creating web chats (video and text) geared towards international audiences. Does that sound confusing? We are a relatively “new” thing and we’re struggling with how to best describe what we do. Here’s our Facebook page, it would be awesome if you could check it out (you don’t have to have an account!) http://co-nx.state.gov

For instance, one of the events we’re working on is Secretary Clinton’s upcoming speech on Internet Freedom. It’s a big policy initiative and she’ll be presenting it this coming week. Our team is going to be there filming it and streaming it online so that people from other countries (and the U.S.) can see how this will affect them. There will be a roundtable discussion afterwards, and co.nx will be the sole person airing that event (streaming it online). We will be taking questions from our chatroom and the round table contributors (from various countries which aren’t published yet) will be answering them!

It’s actually really interesting and pretty exciting, as this use of technology in the DoS is relatively new.

Oh, and I will get to go and see her speak in person with my team…how exciting! It’s how I would imagine people get excited about meeting Hollywood celebrities…H.C. is my star!

Fun Stuff! Well I’ve gotten to do a lot of fun stuff, much of it through my job. We’ve taken “field trips” (actually run throughs with our equipment for upcoming events) to various government buildings. I saw Marine One flying off from the White House(!). Today my group went to lunch to an Indian restaurant. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. I’m so extremely grateful I am in such a great office.

Last Sunday I decided to explore for the first time. Bad idea. I wanted to walk around aimlessly, taking in the major sites on the Mall. Well it was like 23 degrees and windy and I was MISERABLE. Literally my legs were numb. I have figured out that when I leave it either a) needs to be a nice day or b) I need to have a specific destination in mind.

Tomorrow I’m venturing out again to Chinatown. I think it will be fun. Probably go to a museum…the great thing about D.C. is that there are tons of interesting museums and most of them are free.

I haven’t made a photo album yet, but when I do I will post it.

—————————

I feel like there are a lot of things I’m leaving out. But hopefully this will be the first of many blogs. I’ve had trouble with Internet at the hall, but it seems better now.

Comment on anything and let me know the kinds of things you want/don’t want to hear about!
