These are a few of my favorite things…music now

3 Mar

So here are some songs I’m really feeling at the moment. I love passing on music.

Stones by Barbarossa-This song was featured on Monday’s episode of How I Met Your Mother. Pay attention to the music on TV/commercials and search for it later. It’s a great way to get new music.

Go Do by Jónsi-Again, heard snippets of this in a FORD car commercial and loved it.

Power by Kanye West

The Cave by Mumford and Sons-I, like a lot of people, saw them perform at….the Grammys (I think?). Love this song.

Best and Worst of Golden Globes Fashion

17 Jan 108079146_10_1_full

Sometimes I like to pretend I’m Joan Rivers–you know, like 15 years ago before she lost it and forgot people’s names/movies/etc.

Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed at this year’s Golden Globes. (I do NOT own copyright for any of these photos–and sorry I couldn’t find designer names for any of them–not posted yet.)

WORST:

Tilda Swinton
I get that she has her “own style” and she normally dresses fairly masculine, but I just do not like this look. I’m all for being different, but this yellow and white color combination doesn’t do anything to compliment her skin tone/hair color. And are the shirt and skirt attached or is it just the camera angle? No.

Scarlett Johansson
Well first off, she looks miserable Girl, smile! I know you’re going through a divorce, but you’re at the GG! Her off-kilter hair should have been lower on her head in my opinion and it’s too teased. Everything on her is too muted.

Julianne Moore
Well I will say that red-heads have it harder. I just don’t think this shade of pink works with her hair and the red carpet. I also do NOT like the asymmetrical sleeve on this dress. The top is too poofy and it’s a tapered sleeve! When does that ever work?

Helena Bonham Carter
I heard E! News talking about at least she’s, “doing her thing.” Uh, no. She looks like Yoko Ono borrowed Bjork’s dress, let a country star tease her hair, and got dressed in the dark.

Michael C. Hall
Why does the color of your hair(s) not match? Did no one tell you about this before leaving the house? (Note: Melissa pointed out her dad’s beard grows back different colors…I still think you should dye one or the other for an event like this. Also, I do know he’s getting over cancer…so congratulations to him.)

Jackie Weaver
I didn’t know who this woman was. But apparently she was nominated for some award. Even if you’re a behind-the-scenes person, if you’re nominated you should dress up. This looks like something an 80-year-old would wear to church. Or a funeral. Awful.

Julianna Margulies
This looks like one of those “classic Barbies.” I think the top is too low cut/loose fitting. The makeup/accessories/hair are way too plain..and closed toe shoes? No.
Other notables: Heidi Klum and Christina Aguilera.

BEST:

Amber Riley
Props to a full-figured woman wearing a classy, stylish and form fitting dress. I’m tired of these ladies dressing in bags! I love this color on her skin tone. The dress is fun, and I love the addition of a belt!

Claire Danes
Peaches and pinks seemed to be a popular color tonight–and Claire Danes pulls it off! The color looks amazing on her and the column dress fits her slim frame.

Mandy Moore
I’m glad to see Mandy Moore back “around” these days. Her hair looks effortless and rich, the color on her is divine and I love the shape of this dress, and that she avoided accessorizing the already busy neckline.

Katie Lee
Probably not a lot of you know her. She used to be the host of Top Chef (first season) and was briefly married to Billy Joel. I love this dress. The color, the tom boyish look, the embellishments. I also love the layers at the bottom.

Kevin McHale
I love polka dots. I don’t know that this look would have worked on anyone else. But for a fun, quirky, gay teen on a hit show called “Glee,” I think it’s amazing. Young, preppy but clean look. (Note: It has come to my attention he might not be gay…my bad. But still cute.)

Emma Stone
What a great body to be able to pull off such a clean and simple look. I love the blending skin tone look and the way the metallic accessories play off the color and her hair.

Lea Michele
Surprisingly this is the third Glee cast member on my best dressed list. I don’t favor them–if anything it’s the opposite. But Lea’s dress was gorgeous. Full, great shade of pink for her skin. I love that it shows off her petite frame but is still dramatic. The side-hair is messy but classy and I die for the emerald/diamond ring.

Other notables: Kyra Sedgwick and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

So there they are! I’ll have to wait and see how my picks match up to PEOPLE and E!. I’m expecting a call to be on Fashion Police any day now. Let me know in the comments if you agree/disagree/have additions!

These are a few of my favorite things…(blogs)

7 Dec

One of my favorite time-suckers is reading a good blog. Although I would call myself a blogger, the more blogs I read, the more I’m most DEFINITELY a personal blogger. There are a lot of blogs that I either find interesting, or I admire, or that I’m addicted to.  I consider myself a talented writer, but I’m a pretty amateur blogger….but hey, I’m a professional reader!

  1. The Frisky. I consider The Frisky mandatory reading for any young woman. Their articles are new and interesting, and, unlike many sites, I can always find numerous articles per day that interest me. If you’re new to The Frisky, look out for the “Dear Wendy” columns and the special “Quotables” pieces.
They also posted one of my favorite pieces EVER recently, entitled “Nerd Girl Porn,” which features a vintage Stephen Colbert:
    Swoon. How amazingly hot.
  2. JHenderson Studios Blog. This is a blog I found in typical “me” fashion…through stalking. It was a late night (or an early morning, or in the afternoon…one of those…) and I just started clicking on profiles. Is that sketchy? I hope other people do that or I’m gonna seem like a real creeper. Anyway, it’s one of my favorite photo blogs and she takes amazing photos, and is based in the west Tennessee area. I hope she’s still taking photos by the time I get married at 85.
Here’s one of my favorite photos of hers…check her blog out!

    How amazing! And on film!

  3. Mad Men Video Gum Recaps. Reading these recaps is almost as fun as watching the actual show. These hilarious recaps are a great juxtaposition to often somber tone of Mad Men.

  4. Also, I’d love to give a quick shout out to these:
Bravo TV Blogs – I am OBSESSED with the Real Housewives series. I think they’re just quality television. They’re not even a guilty pleasure, because I have NO SHAME! I could write a whole blog analyzing this fine t.v. series, and have thought about doing so…hmm, next blog? Anyway, it probably takes a pretty devoted fan to go to this website and read these blogs, but I find them fascinating. First off, half of the women are so bitter after seeing the episodes, that they unleash a pot of crazy on their blog. Second, you also get a peek behind the scenes as many of the women reveal what happened between shoots, what we didn’t see, etc. And thirdly (is thirdly a word?), many of the women also fill the readers in on what’s happened since then. I guess I’m a fan-girl, but I love these blogs. Bravo also posts blogs on their others shows and from producers, and all of them are just a fun read.
TMZ – I say this as a former “Perez” junkie that checked his site multiple times a day. Well, I’m a TMZ convert now. Perez was getting too mean, too petty and way too hypocrital, to the point that it wasn’t even fun to read. Not only were his posts getting just plain mean (not informative at ALL), but he picked celeb “pets” (like Lady Gaga) who could do no harm and then picked mercilessly on others (Jennifer Anniston). He also didn’t even have a lot to report and was posting pure gossip and fiction. ANYWAY, seeing how I take my celeb news SERIOUSLY, I switched to TMZ. They actually report things with sources or video (read: paparazzi) and are reliable.
The Cut – This is a fashion blog from NY Mag that’s an interesting insight to a world that seems pretty far away from Tennessee.
  5. And finally, I’d like to give a couple of shout-outs to two impressive local blogs from members of my College of Communication class.
Ben K. Moser has done a wonderful job of designing a customized and comprehensive website that includes a portfolio of work and a blog.
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants is also an interesting read from Stephanie Wierwille. She does an excellent job of writing relevant pieces that are both professional and personal.

Happy Reading!

If you have any blog suggestions, please let me know! I’m always looking for interesting finds!

These are a few of my favorite things…(I’m an adult!)

8 Nov

There comes a time, usually during the last years of college…when most people start getting overly-dramatic and exclaiming on Facebook, “GOD WE’RE SO OLD! LOL” I did this. I thought that when I started watching “House Hunters” that meant I was old…nope. This is how I know I’m no longer a college kid that thinks I’m getting old, but rather someone moving into young adulthood…

1. I don’t just “catch the occasional” episode of “House Hunters,” I look up episodes on TV Guide to make sure I catch them all. And there are a few I’ve seen more than three times. Yet I still watch them when they come on.

2. Instead of wanting money to buy kitschy jewelry at Forever 21, I want to start paying credit card/student loans and buy things like this from the Container Store.

3. I no longer think the things in my monthly Pottery Barn Teen catalog are age-appropriate.

4. When I talk to my Teach for America friends I literally hear myself saying, “What is WRONG with kids today?!”

5. I look up the best way to store cheese. Because I like a nice Brie.

6. I get to call myself a grad student! I distinctly remember walking down the hall in high school talking to a friend saying, “Can you believe we know people that are JUNIORS?!” Man we were cool to know people that ‘old’ and ‘sophisticated.’

7. My friends are getting married! That will make you feel older quick.

8. My pictures and posters need frames. Thumbtacks or puddy won’t do…I’m trying to create a homey atmosphere..duh!

9. It’s been years since I’ve stepped foot in an American Eagle (that place used to be hoppin’!) and now almost all of my clothes consist of work-appropriate attire from sale-items at Ann Taylor Loft.

That’s all I can think of now–anyone have other “ah-ha” moments? Leave them in the comments!

HOLY CRAP!

6 Nov

I am very eloquent, it is one of my strengths.

I’ve decided to go to grad school at DePaul in Chicago starting January. I’m getting my MA in Journalism. I’m terrified I’m making the wrong decision, worried about getting into a shitload of debt, worried about being all alone and not knowing anyone, worried I won’t excel in classes, and I have no clue how I’m going to get everything together I need to before I leave.

I’m also excited, thrilled, happy and can’t wait to start this next chapter of my life.

A few days ago I promised another “Favorite Things” post. Well I forgot, but here’s a makeshift one:

These are a few of my favorite things….
Making decisions!

I don’t know if this is the “right” decision or if I’ll regret it later…and I probably won’t know that for a few months, a few years even. But I’m glad I made a decision, that I have a direction and that I have a plan.

I can’t wait to blog from Chicago, and until then I’ll try to keep this blog updated on my progress of getting things in order.

P.S.–If you know of a place to stay or live in Chicago–PLEASE let me know!

These are a few of my favorite things…(food)

9 Sep

So I haven’t blogged recently. Some of my regular viewers (all four of you) might notice a recent blog is missing…if you don’t know the story behind that you should ask, because it’s pretty much the story of my life.

I’ve decided to start a new series. I’m going to blog about my “favorite things.” I think it will just be a fun thing to do, and a great filler for those times when I don’t feel like updating on my life.

So, first installment….these are my favorite foods/meals. I thought of this yesterday when I realized that my tastes have matured some but I still pretty much eat like a 5 year old.

MACARONI AND CHEESE
This is a classic and if you don’t like mac and cheese you’re un-American. When I was in and out of the hospital for surgeries as a child I would apparently call out for macaroni and cheese while still under the influence of anesthesia. Dedication.

Now, if you’re eating it out of the box old-school style everyone knows you HAVE to get the shapes kind. They’re so much better (like, duh!):

CRAB CAKES
After having an awesome crab cake sandwich from DC’s Eastern Market, I’ve been hooked.

INDIAN FOOD
I credit my time in London for getting me into Indian food. I wish there were more great/affordable Indian restaurants around. I love a good Indian feast:

BANANAS
By far the best fruit.
I don’t think I need to add a banana photo.

BEST DESSERT-PEANUT BUTTER CUP
It took me a while to realize this, but literally the best dessert I have ever had in my life was from this place called Curbside Cupcakes in DC. I’ve talked about them before, but it’s just this pink van that drives around and sells different varieties of cupcakes each day. They tweet/Facebook their location and don’t have a regular storefront.
The best: “Peanut Butter Cup.” So decadent. Peanut butter icing like I’ve never tasted before. Rich, not too sweet. And a chocolate cupcake that’s so moist and so chocolaty…it’s unbelievable. Little bits of chocolate within the cupcake top it off.

I think I might have to do a “food part 2″ because I’m getting too hungry. Hopefully this was at least a little interesting!
